Year 1 Curriculum Information
Term: Summer Term 2024
Home Learning:
- It is expected that children are reading daily at home for approximately 10 minutes.
- Once the children are settled , we will be setting English or maths home learning activities on alternate weeks. Work will be set on Wednesdays and needs to be completed by Monday. Tasks will be set on Google Classroom, so please make sure you have joined.
- Children will have a weekly spelling test which will support their learning in phonics and with high frequency words.
Maths:
At OLM we use the Maths No Problem scheme. This scheme focuses on mastery of different mathematical concepts
Each child will have their own workbook which is made of different chapters (see below). At the end of each chapter there will be a REVIEW lesson. Your child will bring home a blank copy of this to complete as homework. You will be able to see which parts of the chapter they have understood confidently, and the areas of the chapter they may need more support and practise.
During the this term we will be learning about: .
Division
This is the first chapter on division. It is a short chapter with two main foci. Pupils will learn about taking a limited number of items and placing a predetermined number into groups to determine how many groups there will be. After this, pupils will be be given a number of items, but will need to figure out how many will go into each group by sharing equally.
Fractions
In this chapter on fractions, pupils will be learning about making halves and quarters before moving on to making the connection between fractions and division in the last lesson.
Numbers to 100
This is the final chapter on counting in Year 1. It will reinforce some concepts previously taught in addition to increasing the complexity of number comparisons and number patterns. Pupils will begin by counting in tens and ones, followed by using number bonds to partition numbers. After this, pupils will be expected to compare numbers to 100 and find number patterns looking at 100-charts.
Time
This chapter explores introductory concepts of time. It covers five main concepts: telling time to the hour and half hour; using terms such as 'next,' 'before' and 'after'; estimating durations of time and comparing time. At the beginning of the chapter, pupils will be exploring analogue clocks and telling time to the hour and half hour. Then they will look at a timeline for an average day and determine the order of events using specific terminology. Finally, pupils will estimate lengths of time and compare measures of time.
Money
In this chapter, pupils will be working towards recognising coins and notes. The chapter begins with pupils looking at coins to help identify them through shape, markings, size and colour. After this, pupils explore notes in a similar fashion, by looking at the colours of the notes and their markings to help identify them.
Volume and Capacity
This chapter on volume and capacity introduces new concepts, in addition to combining knowledge from the chapter on fractions. The first lesson is about comparing volume and capacity, using terms such as 'more than' and 'less than'. The second lesson looks at finding volume and capacity using non-standard units. Lastly, the third lesson explores describing volume using the terms 'half' and 'quarter'.
Mass
This is a short chapter on mass. It begins by comparing mass using terms such as 'heavy/heavier' and 'light/lighter', followed by finding mass using non-standard units. This idea of non-standard units follows on from the previous chapter on volume and capacity.
Space
This is a short chapter on space, which explores the important elements of position, movement and turns. The chapter begins by looking in depth at ways in which we can describe the position of one object relative to another, using terms such as: 'top', 'middle' and 'bottom'; 'around', 'close', 'near' and 'far'; and 'on top of', 'in front of' and 'above'. When looking at movement, the concepts explored are 'up and down', 'forwards and backwards' and 'inside and outside.' Finally, the chapter ends with turns: navigating whole turns, half turns, quarter turns and the notion of clockwise and anticlockwise.
My Maths online home learning will be set every Monday
English:
In Year 1, we use Rocket Phonics. Children start this scheme in Early Years Foundation Stage and then progress on to more complex phonemes and graphemes. The children have their own workbooks, which they fill in each day.
Children read twice a week in school, during small guided reading sessions. We use the corresponding high quality Rocket Phonics reading books. Children also take home two Rocket Phonics reading books a week.
It is really important that children are exposed to a variety of books and to support this we read aloud daily to the children in class. Please could parents support their child by reading aloud to them each day at home so they are exposed to a rich vocabulary of language.
Spellings:
Spellings are set once a week on the Spelling Shed website.
At OLM we use the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) Power of Reading scheme to teach English.
This term we will be reading a range of different poems to perform by different authors, 10 Things I Can Do To Help the World, Look Up, Diary of The Killer Cat and
Biography - Elizabeth Anionwu. |
RE:
We follow the ‘Come and See’ scheme of work. Each topic usually lasts for four weeks. We begin each topic by exploring what each topic means to us before moving on to how it relates to religion. During the year we also learn about other faiths. At OLM we focus on Judaism and Islam. This is a brilliant way to teach respect for our community as a whole, regardless of cultures and beliefs.
The topics we will be covering in the Spring term are;
Topic 7- Holidays and Holydays
Topic 8- Being Sorry
Topic 9- Neighbours
Throughout the course of the year, we will look at the different elements of Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Each month we look at a different value and discuss what each one means and make a class book: |
Autumn 1 - Care of Creation
Autumn 2 - Preferential Option for the Poor
Spring 1 - Solidarity and Peace
Spring 2 - Community and Participation
Summer 1 - Dignity of Workers
Summer 2 - Human Dignity
